Explanation of the South Coast / Narooma Trip by Bedo

This adventure we set out south for a change. There was only five of us as it was during the week and a bit late minute. However, it still turned out well and proved to be a little different compared to other trips as we were able to stay with my cousins in Narooma, 40 minutes south of Batemans Bay, and about five and a half hours form Hornsby.

We stopped on the way down at Ulladulla or Mollymook and check some of the renowned surf breaks. We ended up surfing at a beach called Rennie’s where the boys surfed some intense shorey. After getting out we were able to watch dolphins swimming by and having a surf themselves.

Once we were out and changed it was dark so we continued the last part of the drive by night. We got to Narooma in time to stop by the bottle shop and then head to their house for green chicken curry! The other guys met the family and then we were showed to our room, which fit all five of us in very comfortably, in the end we got the whole downstairs of their house including bathroom to ourselves.

We socialised a bit with our hosts but mainly stuck to our room in the evenings where we could sink a few in peace. A bit later on the first night we went for a walk into town to see what was doing with the nightlife, only to find out there was no night life, all clubs and pubs were closed by the time we got out which was only about 10:30. Anyway we continued to walk through town when Rob snapped and started skitzing out. Like dead set this kid was crazy. You can read into this in more detail in the specific: ‘Rob Goes Mental’ story. Well after all the bullshit with Rob we got into bed at some stage of the night.

The next morning the plan to wake up nice and early for a surf slowly faded as everyone turned off their alarms. By about 10 we got out to explore the Narooma and surrounding area’s coastline. We checked quite a few places but ended up at a beach in a place called Kianga. The surf had dropped off a bit but we found a VERY wedgey little wave off the rocks on the south end of this beach where we surfed for a solid three hours despite the chilly temperature of the water. This is where most of the surf photos came from. Once the conditions worsened we packed up and set off to the local fish and chip shop where everyone cut sic and ate a fuck load.

This afternoon we fucked off everything else there was to do in a bustling Narooma… and designed a game… it involved throwing cards into a bowl that was placed on top of a stool from a considerable distance away. Despite how fun this really was after dinner we were soon drinking again in our room. This night we didn’t even bother to check the clubs so we stayed around home, hit the piss, and ‘mellowed out’.

The next morning after some negotiation, we decided to go out with my uncle on one of his Narooma Charters’ Boats. We were taking a group of people out to Montague Island, which is a nature reserve directly off the coast of Narooma, and we were able to just chill on the boat and do what we want. On the way out we got a call from my aunty who directed us to the location of a couple of whales. We made it to them before they pissed off and watched them ‘frolic’ around and swim straight past the boat, sometimes only metres away.

After that event we continued to the island and dropped everyone off, the dropped off some divers overboard and anchored the boat. We then suited up and jumped in the water to swim with the seals that covered the west side of the island. Fortunately they didn’t fucking stink as much in the water as they did on land! We looked at some fish and swam a bit before the seals started approaching us. These seals ended up coming about a metre away from us and practically swimming through our legs, at one stage a group of about 15 of them came at us but just swam around and pretended to ignore us. While myself, Rob, Andy and Luke enjoyed the experience; Sam remained on the boat, dedicated to filming. Well, I’m sure that’s why he stayed out of the water anyway…

Soon we got out and warmed up on the boat and watched some penguins dart past the boat and some eagles fly over us. Then, we picked up everyone and made our way back to the mainland.

We made our way back to the house and thanked everyone and said goodbye and got on our way in an attempt to get home before dark. Before hitting the road we got another supply of ships from the Fish’n’Chip shop and then we were on our way.

Took us a while and a few stops but the petrol guzzling automobile made it back home and got us to the RSL in reasonable time, despite a considerable detour due to a fatal accident.

It was a different trip, but still eventful, fun and definitely worth it. Thanks to the boys who could make it with such short notice and to the Clark’s for the use of their V8 beast of a car! Hopefully we can do it again sometime soon, but with a larger crew...? Peace.
